IV - Open Inventor Scene Graph File is a file that is created using the Open Inventor toolkit. This program is used for making 3D scenes and a multitude of animations. It is saved in a text-style format and it contains nodes, fields and all of their properties and connections.
The IV - Open Inventor Scene Graph File is often used to describe a variety of elements such as geometry, lighting, textures cameras, color and sometimes sequencing. Available are a variety of fabricated shapes that are capable of receiving customization in the IV files. Some of these are cones, cylinders, spheres, cubes and even text. Open Inventor, the program that reads these files, was initially created by Silicon Graphics International, which also released an open source variation.
SGI has since opened the program up for third party support, and it is now maintained on a commercial level by a company called VSG. Open Inventor is built over OpenGL and it is meant to offer a much higher layer of abstraction for programmers.
