The PCAP - Packet Capture Data is a file of captured network packets. These files are created with a program called Wireshark. Wireshark is a free program use to capture network packets for analysis.
Real time packet capturing is used for packet sniffing and allows a network administrator to view and evaluate network traffic in real time. The resulting files can be used to learn about network packet structure and flow. Analysis of the packets may be done using the libpcap or WinPcap libraries.
Wireshark has been made for use on Windows, Mac or Linux operating systems.
