RPM - Red Hat Package Manager File
This is an installation package that was originally developed by Red Hat Linux but is now used in several other Linux distribution packages. Usually used to install programs in Linux OS systems, .RPM files may also be converted for use with other Linux and Unix distributions such as .DEB files for Debian. A utility in Debian called Alien converts the .RPM file into a new file of the same name with the .DEB extension for use by Debian.
