TAR - Consolidated Unix File Archive
Storage command from the historic UNIX Tape ARchive command. Currently used to store multiple files in an uncompressed data format. The TAR storage format may be used in conjunction with GNU Zip or other zip tool for archival compression. NOTE: Filenames with the “.tar.gz” double extension denotes a TAR file that is compressed with a GZip utility. A simplified extension, known as a “tarball”, combines the extensions into a shortened format denoted as a .TGZ file.
