WP5 - WordPerfect 5 Document
WordPerfect 5.1, released on November 6, 1989 became the most popular word processor available on any computing platform. This version, using the .WP5 file extension, became a de facto standard, used by so many corporations, companies and individuals that the standard requested file type for distribution became the .WP5 file type. Since this became such an overwhelming standard for word processors, third party word processing programs, both DOS based and Windows based incorporated an internal conversion utility to import .WP5 files directly into their programs.
WordPerfect 5 introduced the ability to build tables within a word processing document as well as Mac style pull down menus usable during mouse operations instead of the standard function key access to features and options. Because of these functions and features as well as the fact that virtually every other word processing program available could read and write the WP5 file type, not only did WordPerfect 5.1 become the world's best selling word processing package for the personal computer, the WP5 file type became essentially the world standard for word processing files.
Not only can .WP5 files still be opened by virtually any current word processing application such as Microsoft Word and OpenOffice, but any later version of WordPerfect from version 5.1 to the current Corel WordPerfect can open and save them as well.
