I like the concept behind SPAMfighter Standard 7.3.77 — it's kind of like a neighborhood watch for your computer. The idea is that if you get spam, you report it and the system learns to block it for all users around the world. When I tried it out, it didn't disappoint. I ran it on Outlook, and it also works on Outlook Express, Windows Mail, Windows Live Mail or Thunderbird.
Luckily, I remembered to turn off my normal spam filter so I could get an accurate test. Once this program was running solo I didn't notice any real increase in spam or phishing emails — in fact there might have been a little less of that kind of activity. There was a certain satisfaction when a spam did slip through of knowing that it was being reported to other users around the world and that it would soon be blocked on many people's computers.
In some ways, the system seems to be a little reactive, rather than proactive, since it is basically waiting for someone somewhere to report something as spam so that it can be blocked, but the end result seems to justify the means — most of the spam was blocked and I didn't lose any personal or business emails (that's a first, with any spam filter). I guess with spam being developed continuously, any system is going to be reactive, and at least this one is relying on the cognitive ability of human beings to recognize spam rather than some easily tricked algorithm.
I didn't really get into a lot of the bells and whistles of this product, like the whitelist management. I didn't get a lot of foreign language emails or picture emails to test it out on, either, although according to their website they handle those well (all of their other claims seemed to be accurate, so I have no reason to doubt those). From what I did see, though, SPAMfighter Standard 7.3.77 is a good spam filter with a unique updating method that might just help it to stay functional for a long time.
